Roadtrip 2016 Fall: Vancouver - Yakima - Bend - John Day River - Port Orford - Florence - Seaside - Vancouver

Day 5 - Mitchell, John Day Fossil Beds - Painted Hills Unit

1am, Emma's last EVA of yesterday evening. The mothership hovers, waiting for her return.

A wet departure from mothership - that's our driveway.

We expected the rains to load up the local waterfalls. Nope. That really looks like a waterfall, but it's totally dry - the falling water illusion is actually crusted white mineral deposits. Really.

Half an hour away, the metropolis of Mitchell.

Rest yer horses here.

Thirst quencher for the modern horse.

Russ, Emma, with friends.

Fall leaves take flight

This is the local restaurant. Really. In fact, it's open for business.

I've always wondered why Oregonians insist on pumping yer gas. It's so you don't see these stickers. In case you can't read it: "UNTESTED UNLICENSED UNAPPROVED STATE OF OREGON USE IN TRADE PROHIBITED DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE MEASUREMENT STANDARDS SALEM, OR 97301-2532 NO. U 23142"

No one told her that summer is over.

The faces of Mitchell.

Curious indeed.

Don't want to be here. Nope don't want to be here. Can someone turn the wind machine off?

The famous John Day painted hills. In today's light they look sooooo velvety.

Once again, we notice the green slime creeping over the landscape in a government-controlled area.

If you stare long enough, you can see it move.

High desert garden.

The Monolith, found in 1962. It somehow controls the green slime.

This is the talisman that wards off the green slime. It says: "Shoo! Shoo!"

Wendy and Emma continue photographing, unaware of the impending danger.

Of course, no trip is officially underway until the inaugural Mystery Poo of the Day.
